Once regarded as an add-on to regional itineraries, Cambodia is quickly establishing itself as a standalone luxury destination. With the recent opening of the US$2 billion Techo Takhmao International Airport and a surge in
high-profile hotel launches from Rosewood to Six Senses, the country is positioning itself as Southeast Asia’s next frontier for discerning travellers.

At the heart of this transformation lies Shinta Mani Angkor, a property that captures the creative energy and cultural authenticity fuelling Cambodia’s hospitality renaissance. Designed by the visionary Bill Bensley – the creative mind behind some of the world’s most iconic hotels, this property doesn’t just reflect modern Cambodian luxury; it helped define it.

A New Expression of Khmer Elegance

Nestled within Siem Reap’s leafy French Quarter, between the Royal Gardens and the Old Market, Shinta Mani Angkor reimagines the Khmer experience through design and storytelling. The 115-room property, comprising the
Angkor Wing, Bayon Wing, and the 10 Bensley Collection Pool Villas, reflects Bensley’s signature blend of theatricality and restraint.

“The design was inspired by the richness of Cambodian culture and the magic of storytelling through space,” explains Benjamin Lehmann, General Manager of Shinta Mani Angkor. “It’s luxurious yet playful, where modern style meets local tradition.”

A striking monochrome palette, punctuated by saffron tones inspired by monks’ robes, sets a sophisticated mood. Handcrafted Cambodian artworks and mythological motifs imbue each space with local spirit, while serene water features and tropical gardens create an atmosphere of calm and connection.

Stories in Every Space

Each of the hotel’s three wings tells a distinct design story. The Angkor Wing, a 39-room boutique enclave, showcases Khmer-inspired interiors adorned with exquisite images of Angkor’s temples. A 20-metre pool surrounded by lush greenery provides a peaceful contrast to the city’s hustle. Meanwhile, amenities such as a fully equipped gym,
an art gallery, and a boutique elevate the luxury experience that discerning travellers expect from star hotels.

Next door, the Bayon Wing introduces 66 rooms, including two Junior and two Executive Suites, arranged around a striking monochromatic courtyard pool. Here, Bensley’s geometric precision meets tropical landscaping, a study in harmony between structure and nature.

The crown jewels are undoubtedly the 10 private Bensley Collection Pool Villas, each a self-contained retreat spanning 156 square metres. With separate bedroom and bathroom pavilions, nine-metre pools, and rooftop sky lounges for dining or stargazing, they embody the designer’s flair for blending intimacy with theatricality. For larger groups, select villas can be joined into expansive two-bedroom residences, ideal for families or friends travelling together.

Luxury with Purpose

What distinguishes Shinta Mani Angkor from other luxury addresses in Cambodia is not just its striking visual identity, but the emotion it evokes. “Every corner of the hotel has been considered,” Lehmann explains. “Bensley wanted guests to feel that the hotel has a personality, not just a polished look.”

That personality shines in Bensley’s Bar, a social hub where locals and travellers mingle over inventive cocktails, and in Kroya by Chef Chanrith, which tempts diners with Khmer tasting menus served at its outdoor swing tables. The Shinta Mani Spa by Khmer Tonics further enhances the sense of local connection with natural, homegrown treatments inspired by Cambodia’s healing heritage.

Even leisure moments are curated with imagination, from floating breakfasts and sunrise temple tours to private starlit dinners framed by Apsara dancers. Guests seeking immersion can join Khmer cooking classes or visit APOPO’s heroic landmine-clearing rats to witness firsthand how these remarkable rodents are trained to detect hidden explosives and restore safety to Cambodian soil.

Beyond its aesthetics and service, the hotel champions purposeful luxury. Through the Shinta Mani Foundation,
every stay supports local education, healthcare, and enterprise. “Luxury here goes beyond style, it’s about creating meaning,” Lehmann notes. “Our guests know their visit helps empower local communities, making their stay impactful as well as indulgent.”

Elevating Cambodia’s Next Frontier

Lehmann believes Cambodia offers something Southeast Asia’s more established destinations no longer can: authenticity and discovery. “Compared to Thailand, Cambodia offers a more profound sense of connection,” he says. “There’s an intimacy here, in the design, the service, and the experiences, that travellers find refreshing.”

Properties like Shinta Mani Wild, its jungle sister in the Cardamom Mountains, and Song Saa Private Island further demonstrate how design-led hospitality and environmental stewardship are redefining luxury in the region.
Since rebranding in 2022, Shinta Mani Angkor has earned honours from Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia and DestinAsian for Best City Hotel and Best Spa in Cambodia. Yet for Lehmann and his team, the truest reward comes from returning guests who see the property not as a hotel, but as a continuing chapter in their Cambodian story.

A Symbol of Cambodia’s New Luxury Narrative

With its blend of architectural artistry, heartfelt hospitality, and purpose-driven luxury, Shinta Mani Angkor stands as both a design icon and a cultural ambassador. It embodies a new narrative for Cambodia, one that celebrates creativity, community, and connection as the true hallmarks of modern luxury.

As the world’s gaze turns toward Cambodia’s evolving high-end travel scene, Shinta Mani Angkor isn’t merely keeping pace; it’s leading the way, proving that the most powerful form of hospitality is one that not only indulges but also inspires.
