In a market drowning in functional drinks, energy shots and relaxation tonics, New Zealand’s Ārepa is zeroing in on the organ that matters most: your brain. The Kiwi brand isn’t offering a quick buzz or a fleeting moment of calm; it’s selling clarity. Where most functional beverages promise a momentary lift, this one is designed to cut through the mental fog.
Founders, Angus Brown and Zac Robinson, spent nearly a decade refining that idea. The pair met at university, bonded over their mutual struggles with brain fog and burnout and set out to create something different, a drink designed to sharpen mental clarity without leaning on caffeine or sugar.
“I wondered why we couldn’t create something that was good for the brain, good for health and good for mental wellness,” Brown says on the company’s website.

To get there, they partnered with neuroscientist Professor Andrew Scholey and a team of researchers to create formulas grounded in clinical evidence rather than marketing spin. The brand claims 13 independent trials have validated the cognitive function and fatigue-reducing benefits of its products, an unusually science-heavy stance in a category known more for vibes than validation.
Their timing is well-placed. The global brain-health supplements market was valued at $10.95 billion in 2024 and is projected to more than double to $23.52 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research. The report identified Asia Pacific as the fastest-growing regional market, driven by rising awareness of mental health concerns and demand for products that support focus, memory, and stress resilience.

Ārepa is leaning into this growing demand with a complete `brain food’ lineup, from powders and capsules to
ready-to-drink beverages, built around its patented New Zealand pine-bark and blackcurrant extracts.
The ingredients are designed to boost focus, reduce mental fatigue and sharpen cognitive performance. Its newest additions are two sparkling drinks. Uplift is pitched as a crash-free pick-me-up, pairing L-theanine, American ginseng and vitamins B5 and B6 with a ginger-peach fizz aimed at breaking the 3 PM slump. Calm & Clarity is the brand’s go-to to help smooth stress and improve focus, blending L-theanine, pine bark extract and antioxidant-rich blackcurrant juice. Both are caffeine-free and naturally sweetened. Flavours include ginger-peach or spiced orange for Uplift, and blackcurrant or yuzu-lemon-vanilla for Calm & Clarity.

Even the name Ārepa, a Te Reo Māori transliteration of “alpha”, is itself a nod to neuroscience, inspired by the
alpha-wave state associated with calm, focused flow. Still, the company stresses that no drink can replace a balanced diet, sleep and exercise. These aren’t miracle elixirs, but they do tap into a growing consumer appetite for smarter sips and beverages that do more than hydrate.
Its ambitions are scaling too. The company recently announced a joint venture with family-owned beverage manufacturer Brix & Co. to license and manufacture its brain-drink range across New Zealand and Australia.
Ārepa isn’t just selling drinks, it’s selling a mindset. A caffeine-free alternative for the brain-tired generation, packaged sleekly and positioned around science rather than stimulants. Whether Uplift becomes your afternoon reset or
Calm & Clarity your antidote to brain fog, one thing’s sure: this Kiwi export is redefining what it means to drink to your health and your overworked cortex.
