Nestled in the ancient town of Shuhe, just north of Lijiang in Yunnan province, northwest China, Lan Bistro – Yunnan is a bold yet refined reimagination of Yunnan’s rich cultural identity, told through a modern lens. Once home to the earliest Naxi settlers and an essential, well-preserved stop on the Ancient Tea Horse Route, Shuhe provides a fitting backdrop for this contemporary expression of Yunnan heritage. Far from the folkloric clichés often used to represent the region, Lan Bistro’s aesthetic offers an experience that seems both deeply grounded and distinctively international.
The moment you step into Lan Bistro, you are immediately transported from the monotony of Shuhe’s surrounding commercial landscape, a deliberate design choice. Created by FUNS Creative Design Consultant,
this 2100-square-metre restaurant leads with a 300-metre-long entrance lined with lush greenery, stone textures, and winding wooden pathways, creating a stark yet calming transition for guests as they enter this oasis. “One of the things we wanted to achieve with this entrance was for the customer to leave the hustle and bustle of the old town behind and immediately feel relaxed,” shares head designer Robin Luo.
Founded in 2014, FUNS Creative Design Consultant is an award-winning firm specialising in luxury commercial environments. Guided by a design philosophy that emphasises the integration of nature, architecture and space,
the firm is recognised for its ability to balance creative expression with operational functionality. FUNS shared that
the owners were familiar with the firm’s previous work on Chon Buri, another restaurant project in Southern Yunnan, Xishuangbana. With a strong portfolio spanning key Chinese cities and international markets, including Toronto,
New York, Florence and Bangkok, their appointment as lead design consultant for Lan Bistro was a natural fit.

With “dissolving boundaries” as Lan Bistro’s core concept, the design aims to merge nature with people’s everyday lives by breaking away from traditional architectural enclosure. At the end of the ceremonious entranceway, you arrive at a semi-open structure that allows the space to grow naturally like a plant. This organic architectural approach is emphasised by large clusters of bamboo columns which appear to shoot up from the ground, holding aloft the second-floor bamboo canopy. The building’s robust steel frame is hidden beneath curved bamboo-weave surfaces, creating a seamless look and feel and further convincing us that the building itself rose naturally from the earth.
The pool at the heart of the garden serves as a natural canvas, elegantly reflecting the sculptural bamboo dome and the distant snow-capped mountain silhouette.
The wooden bridge pathways also link distinctive lounging areas and stylish dining terraces, shaded by handcrafted parasols that lend a soft, sun-dappled romance that feels more coastal retreat than mountain town. These intimate vignettes, together with other thoughtfully crafted areas such as the snow mountain viewing deck and waterside booth seating, invite guests to linger longer. The layout breaks away from the traditional courtyard’s inward-facing seclusion, allowing the restaurant to operate flexibly throughout the day. It could transition from an open-air market by day, to an alluring social lounge by dusk, and finally an intimate retreat by night.
Inside Lan Bistro, layered textures, soft furnishings and natural materials converge like the final brushstrokes of a painting, essential expressions of the restaurant’s design ethos that marries culture, modernity and understated sophistication. The rough stone walls contrast sharply with the delicate bamboo-woven ceiling. Staying clear of culturally symbolic clichés, the use of fieldstone, bluestone slabs, reclaimed timber, and bamboo structures silently echoes the historical texture of the ancient Tea-Horse Road, evoking material memory and spatial narrative to construct cultural perception.

Much like the interior design, where contemporary lines meet handcrafted details and natural textures, Lan Bistro’s menu reinterprets local flavours with modern sensibilities. Drawing inspiration from Yunnan’s rich culinary landscape, signature creations such as Black Truffle and Ham Tart, Yunnan Mushroom Pasta, Porcini and Crackling Rice with Beef Tongue, Charcoal Grilled Yak Skewers and Sour Papaya Iced Coffee, exemplify how creativity and cultural fusion define the dining experience.

Yunnan’s tourism growth has been robust and shows no sign of slowing down. In 2024, the province achieved a record tourism revenue of 1.14 trillion yuan, marking a 20.7% year-on-year increase, according to a Yunnan provincial government report. As tourists’ expectations evolve, so too does the demand for spaces that reflect a more cosmopolitan and design-savvy perspective. Lan Bistro represents this new chapter in Yunnan’s tourism story
– a response to the rise of sophisticated Chinese travellers increasingly seeking experiences that combine international aesthetics with local authenticity.
